I met Christy when we worked together back in 2012ish? 2013? She is the kind of person you meet & right away know you are going to love. She definitely made our work days better & constantly had all of us laughing! Luckily, we have stayed in touch since both moving on from the job we shared (thank God amiright Christy?!) . When Christy started posting pictures of her journey around the country with her dog(s). (She started her journey with 2, sadly one of them passed during the trip) I was intrigued! She had moved out of her house, got a new car, attached a camper & was just living her best life. Her work space was literally the beach for like a week guys. When it wasn’t the beach it was the woods, campgrounds, every spot was beautiful. She was writing, biking, spoiling her dogs, she. was. killing. IT! I knew she HAD to be a Girl Boss feature! So please enjoy this interview with her, read her stuff, follow her on Instagram, & be prepared to be equal parts envious + inspired!
Tell me about the moment you made the decision to sell your house, get a camper & hit the road.
I didn’t actually decide to sell my house. I lived across from the KCK courthouse and they pulled eminent domain on me. I didn’t even know that was still a thing. I had two senior dogs and wanted to be able to spend more time with them, so I quit my full-time job and my night teaching job, and we hit the road. In 2013, I had made a photo of me on a bicycle pulling an Airstream with my dogs looking out the window. Once my house deal happened, I thought, why not? It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I grabbed it.
Tell me about your favorite stop you have made so far.
So many and for different reasons. Honestly, probably this one. I traveled through 26% of the states and I am tired! So now I am home and happy. I missed my people.
On the road, I loved Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge, GA. A very nice campground that has an incredible mountain biking trail system 1.3 miles down the road. I stayed there twice and plan to go back at some point.
The only companions you had with you were 2 very adorable dogs. What was that like?
Lonely. There were times when I would go four days without saying a word to another human. That is why I’m so happy to be home.
How long have you been writing?
Ever since I learned how.
How many writing jobs do you have right now? Or have you had in say the last week? It seems like you’re always getting something new!
I’m freelance now, so one? Sort of? I just started blogging for Hautebutch clothing, and I write short horror stories; I also write resumes. I just finished proofreading a huge real estate company’s new booklet, and I do closed captioning. Neither of those is really writing, but they are related to it. Good grammar and all that. And I have a nonfiction book proposal that I am working on, so hopefully that will lead to something big.
What advice would you give an aspiring writer?
Get used to rejection and keep putting your work out there with confidence anyway. Getting rejected means you sent it to the wrong place, not that your writing isn’t good. Publishers (magazines, books, websites, etc.) look for a certain type of writing, and if yours doesn’t fit, they won’t publish your work, no matter how exceptional it might be. Don’t give up.
What are your plans moving forward?
Keep going with the flow. At the moment, I’m staying put, but I am going to continue to live in my trailer. It suits me and my dog very well, and I like it a lot. And this way I can pick up and travel again if the mood strikes.
As far as work goes, I need to send my work out more often. I really need to finish my book proposal and send that out into the world.
Where can people follow along with you? Read some of your work?
