I’m typing this from my cell phone so bare with me. 😂. If you follow me on social media at all, you know I recently injured my foot pretty severely. I’ve been on the couch for a week but I simply could not stay quiet on the state of our country any longer.
If you’re like me & you watch The Handmaid’s Tale, you’re very interested in HOW America became the dystopian society that is Gilead. I remember watching the first season & saying to friends when it would come up, “I don’t think we’re going to start farming women for babies.” Now here we are with the second season, showing more of the world Gilead is outside of the main characters (June’s) home, & while I still don’t think Handmaid’s are in our future, the rest of it may not be that far off.
You see the people who run Gilead (America) use the Bible for every rule, every punishment, every law they’ve put into place. Sound familiar? By the way, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, kindly WATCH THE NEWS. 😃
If you’ve been following my blog you know that I was raised in the church. I attended an Assemblies of God (AG) church three times a week for 20 years. While I still believe in the existence of a God, I no longer attend a church.
When I heard what Sarah Huckabee said. I just was momentarily flabbergasted, then immediately was like “that’s the problem.” Her one sentence sums up the entire problem with the “evangelicals” (if you can even still consider them evangelical) who are blindly supporting this administration.
I should point out that I understand the immigration system in this country is VERY flawed. I don’t want people entering our country illegally either. The system needs to be fixed. I do not at all see how a step towards fixing this problem is ripping children & babies away from their parents & putting them in cages like stray dogs.
In case you live under a rock, when being questioned about Jeff Sessions use of the Bible to defend the Trump admins policy of separating babies/children from their families, Huckabee was dodging the question & stating that she couldn’t comment on what he said because she “wasn’t aware of it.” Fine. I don’t take issue with that. What I take issue with is what she said next. Which was this, “I can say it is very biblical to enforce the law.”
Okay. Gay marriage is legal. Abortion is legal some places. Marijuana is legal some places. These are laws. Laws that evangelicals don’t want to be laws…maybe the marijuana 😉. Look I don’t want abortion to be legal either. But what I take issue with is evangelicals picking & choosing when/how they are going to use the Bible. A book by the way that was written thousands of years ago. Not only that but, that has been translated so many times that you can use the same verse to argue two opposing points!
Evangelicals seems to be missing the part of their favorite book where Jesus hung out with the poor, the sick, the sinners. The part where he said “love thy neighbor as thyself”. The part in Leviticus when he said “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” By the way, unless you’re a Native American, you’re an immigrant to this country. We’re all living on stolen land.
Churches. If you’re wondering why you’re loosing millennials in the thousands, why people who value basic human rights aren’t attending your services anymore, THIS IS WHY.
I think back to the first official trailer for season one of the Handmaid’s Tale. Elizabeth Moss’ voices come on & says,
“I was asleep before. That’s how we let it happen. When they slaughtered Congress we didn’t wake up. When they blamed terrorists & suspended the constitution, we didn’t wake up then either. I’m awake now.”
Don’t be asleep. NOW is the time to wake up. NOW is the time to step into action. NOW is the time to do something! If you’re wondering what you can do & how you can make an impact, the answer is very simple-VOTE. That is the easiest thing you can do to make your voice heard.
